Today’s question comes from Angela and Angela asks:
“I’ve heard that WordPress is the best platform for building a website and that it’s Search Engine Optimised without me having to do anything. Is that true?”
Well, look, the truth is there’s no such thing as a ready-made SEO optimised CMS or Content Management System.
WordPress is very popular with SEO types, because I think it makes it easier for a layperson, a small business owner to make changes that do have a positive influence on your SEO.
But it doesn’t come perfectly set up and ready to go.
So simply using the WordPress platform for your website, doesn’t mean you’ve done your SEO. There’s a little bit more to it than that, unfortunately.
WordPress is great because of the Plugins you can use that will do some of the hard work for you. One of the most famous of those is the Yoast plugins, which helps you format Titles and Meta Descriptions as well as a few other bits and bobs.
Yoast is famous for its traffic light system that helps you tell how well optimised a page of content is. But some people can find that traffic light system a little confusing as well.
So unfortunately Angela. No.
What WordPress does offer is a good starting point. It’s a good place to start and I would say it’s probably a better place to start than some of the other platforms, like Wix for example. A better place to start with your SEO.
But unfortunately no, it’s not SEO optimised out of the box.
