DOMAIN: Is changing a domain bad for SEO?

  • Ideally, you don’t want to change your domain name. It’s not just about SEO, but also from a user experience point of view.
  • Every domain builds up Authority and you’ll lose some when you move (leaky bucket syndrome).
    • Dodgy reasons: If your old domain has been penalised you must not redirect the old domain to the new in any way.
    • Non-dodgy reason: If you’re creating a new domain for other reasons, you’ll need to set up 301 redirects – this means they’ll automatically be redirected to your new web address.
